10 NBA Teams to Watch Out For

Was the Summer of 2010 as wild as you expected? Did the hype live up to the action (well, vice-versa)? There was a time that it seemed like every other team was making moves while the Jazz were standing still.

YodaOh such padawan learners we’ve all become have we not? (read it like Yoda would say it).

As fate would have it we didn’t stand pat, and over the course of the Summer the Jazz made some moves, seemingly improving for now, all while preparing for the future too. Where were you as we signed Al Jefferson after a slick trade by KOC? Where were you when we talked Raja out of Kobe’s helicopter, were you one of the booers that were in the ESA as the Jazz drafted Gordon Hayward?

Of course some of the strange and wild sentiments we Jazz fans went through were a result of the speed at which the rest of the NBA were moving to sign up free agents.

And maybe a few of them got it right, and maybe a few teams will even be better than you remember; should the Jazz fail to blow them out, or even, (gasp!) lose to them don’t be surprised, don’t jump ship my friends – we should be able to see this coming from a mile away.

#1 – The LA Clippers will make the playoffs. Doesn’t it sound crazy when you read it, here, try it again: THE LA CLIPPERS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. Call me a sucker for mainstream media but I’m feeling the rise of Eric Gordon through his Team USA play overseas, they have a good center in Chris Kaman, an exciting PG in Baron Davis (he’s not fat, he’s just big boned), SG in aforementioned Eric Gordon, PF in Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Al-Farouq Aminu, Eric Bledsoe, (not to mention that they have a spiffy new website); one could go on and on about potential here.

Sure the Clippers are the red-headed step child of the “California League”, but this should be their year to shine (or insert pre-destined fate to continue to stink).

Tiago Splitter#2 – San Antonio Spurs – Don’t let last years sweeping of the Alamo’s finest lull you into a sense of relaxation; Tony Parker is back and healthy, Tim Duncan is even older, Richard Jefferson has even more potential to be a black hole on the offensive side while Tiago Splitter brings the old “Twin Towers” attack back to ‘Antonio.

But seriously, all tongue-in-cheek speeches aside, the Spurs have the ability to really knock some teams around this year. Tiago Splitter is a big guy, George Hill is dangerous, and James Anderson was a great draft pick. Oh, did I mention that DeJuan Blair is really good? I didn’t? Well, here it is: DeJuan Blair is a talent to be reckoned with.

Perhaps the biggest “if” on their squad will be Manu Ginobili. Can the aging star keep it together for one more run through the Playoffs? Or will he over-dramatize the last few flops of his career this season? I suspect he will ride a little more pine this season as we watch George Hill become a superstar, and eat popcorn, wondering why they gave a longer term deal to Richard Jefferson.

#3 – Our “Rivals“, the Houston Rockets… For one reason or another, the Rockets have been the “media darlings” of the offseason; seemingly hyjacking their ways into various top ten franchise of the future, top teams, most likely to win the title type of posts and lists from various “big britches” media outlets (see: ESPN, CBS Sports).

Looking at their roster I can see some glimmer of light, while I’m not so sure I’m buying into it, let’s go ahead and play a little devils advocate shall we?

Take a look at their starting 5: Kevin Martin, Aaron Brooks, Luis Scola, Yao Ming, Shane Battier. Now their next couple of guys off the bench: Chase Budinger, Chuck Hayes, and Kyle Lowry. Hmmm, well okay, they will bring the tough and hustle like last year. But do they have the talent to own some NBA teams, isn’t that what the great teams do? Let’s just say TBD.

OKC Zombie Sonics#4 – Of course I’m going to mention the OKC Thunder, and my God are they a deep team. Just looking at their preliminary roster I’m wondering whom they will sacrifice to the waiver wires for other teams to feed upon. But I am also wondering where their toughness will come from, surely they cannot lean on Serge Ibaka to bring the mean on the court, can they? Collison brings veteran panache, and that is just about it.

At the end of the day it’s their youth coupled with athleticism that will push them ahead of the pack. I’d like to meet Sam Presti, Troy Weaver and the rest of their scouting ranks so that I may shake their hands; have the Seattle Zombie Sonics been revived?

#5 – Milwaukee Bucks. Yes, I just said the Milwaukee Bucks. Though I never imagined I’d be talking about them as a team to “watch out for”, here we are, and here I am doing just that. They were busy little beavers during the off season signing veterans to their front line while adding enough youth to be legitimate contenders for several years to come.

Picking up Corey Maggette was a nice move by the team; by adding him, you get a player that will go to the line on a regular basis, and have no fear to commit a hard foul when you need it most.

One glaring weak spot to look at will be their PG spot; sure Brandon Jennings can play 45 minutes a game right now, but what will you do once he has picked up his fifth foul, or turns an ankle – turn to Keyon Dooling and Earl Boykins? Well, let’s just pretend that won’t happen to them this season.

One final question, what will become of Michael Redd? Can he become a contributor to this team come playoff time, and if so, look out. Long story short; the Bucks have their eyes on deep playoff runs for years to come, anything less would be uncivilized.

A Flurry of NBA Blogging

Please allow me to feature a couple of blogs that I have authored over the past few weeks on the Utah Jazz new social media fan hub, Utah Jazz 360 (that is 360 degrees of coverage for your Utah Jazz!).

First, I believe it is time that the NBA considers realigning the Western Conference divisions. Elaboration below…

NBA Divisions“Should the NBA realign the West?

If not in the name of the “new economy”, why not for the sake of geographical locales?

Take a look at the map below, what’s wrong with this picture? Never mind that there isn’t a team in Idaho, it’s the fact that the North West Division has two teams that are about as North West as fried chicken is healthy.” – CONTINUE READING HERE

Next, a troubling topic awoke me from my slumber one night, Do the Utah Jazz have a true rival?

“When you close your eyes and clear your mind, who do the Utah Jazz line up as their rival?

Are you seeing a clear picture of any one team? The University of Utah has the lowly BYU Coug’s, but, whom do the Jazz have?

I mean, is it really possible that a  pro sports team of any type could live without the presence of a true rival?

What about the Denver Nuggets? In my mind they should be our top rival – we share a border, share ideals in the ski industry. Shouldn’t this be the queen mother of them all? However, I’m not so sure that the Salt Lake Jazz even exist in the eyes of the Nuggz. It seems as though they barely got up out of their beds to play us during the Playoffs, nor were they very full of the venom that true rivals possess for each other during the series.” – CONTINUE READING

Mountain Biking: Get back in the saddle

I’ve been longing for a great journey on a mountain bike since my purchase of a used Ironhorse downhill bike from Jackson Hole Resort last year. While the riding around town, at the park, and through some minor hills of the Tanner Park Gully has been a good time, I’m pretty sure that it’s time to get her to the slopes and do some downhill runs.

This was inspirational (although they’re going up hill at first – instead of down…)

Just the downhill seems to be a better fit for me right now though…

Someone else asked me how to use Twitter

Okay people, let me start by answering this question directly: Twitter is what you want it to be. Whether it be a social outlet to talk to people about products, services, friendships, sports, or emptiness – or maybe you like to use it as a news feed, keeping you up to date with your favorite brands and interests. There are even so many more uses beyond that it’s madness.

So quick answer is, “How do you like your information” –  if you answered fast and friendly, then use it – but the more people you follow the more types of users you will see.

Allow me to outline my current tactics:
1. Decide what I am interested in reading about (does it pertain to what I am tweeting about?)
2. Find/follow accounts that release news, stories, general info on said subjects (use the search tool!)
3. Digest info as it comes in, using above stated guidelines, engage authors in subject (ask questions, make statements – don’t forget to reply using @username)
4. Make statements of my own on subject matter of interest
5. Release links to press releases that you may be involved in, or link to pages of your website /blog (with titles of story accompanying link!)
6. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your box while doing this! Have fun with it, and stay relevent.

Will this methodology guarantee you success? No, this is a guideline to get you started, so get to work, after all, you have to work for real life followers to see success (don’t forget to outline how you plan on measuring “success”).

2009-10 NBA Teams to keep an eye on …

Rather than write about the teams that are obviously going to be at the top of the crop, let’s talk about teams that are making the push to contend, the ones that as fans of the game, we need to keep our eyes on. Some of them may seem obvious, but let’s break them down with the others for a minute…

Western Conference:

San Antonio– The Spurs have been busy little beavers during the off season, mending the weak spots in their armor by adding depth and scoring. The biggest addition being Richard Jefferson, how he plays along side other stars like Ginobili and Parker will be the key to their success. Minor additions include Theo Ratliff to back up Tim Duncan, and their draft picks Dejuan Blair, and Nando De Colo* (still unsigned*).

Portland- Andre Miller was where the Blazers spent their money after missing their attempt at a “smash and grab” with Paul Millsap. While I’m not so sure that Andre will fit into their style of offense, however, being a savvy veteran of the league, he is a marked improvement over Steve Blake at the point.

Dallas– No doubt that the Shawn Marion/ Dirk Nowitzki/ Jason Kidd show will be an interesting one to watch. Add in Josh Howard, Jason Terry and some help down low via Drew Gooden and they have the labeling of a surprise contender. It is my opinion that Shawn Marion will enjoy a slight rebirth on this team; look for a few scoring records to fall, and alley-oops to fly.

Eastern Conference:

Toronto– Hedo, or he don’t; that is the question. Chris Bosh and Turkglo create an interesting tandem, perhaps they belong more in a category titled “comeback team of the year”, I just feel the Raptors pushing some of the “East Elite” with the team ball concepts that Colangelo has been trying to instill in Team USA. Key additions to this team include: drafting DeMar DeRozan, Hedo Turkglo, while adding depth with Amir Johnson on the block, and Marco Belinelli in the back court.

Milwaukee– Hakim Warrick and Andrew Bogut – sure neither name has instilled fear into the hearts of opponents but this is a team that started to really bark at the end of the 2008-09 season; sounds to me like that bark is about to turn into a roar. Why is that? Well, the addition of Brandon Jennings, whom I pick to be an outstanding Rookie, is a piece of the puzzle that they have been needing for some time. Toss in another rookie, Jodie Meeks (another favorite of mine…), and you now have depth behind Michael Redd. My biggest disappointment with this team however is that they let Ramon Sessions, and Charlie Villenueva walk (I understand the whole money thing, it’s just a shame that’s all)…

Detroit – Oh Motown, how you got that groove back this off season. The real caveat will be the melding of Rip Hamilton and Ben Gordon, can it be done? Well it must be done for them to survive the rough and tumble that is also known as the NBA season. I like Charlie Villenueva as an upgrade over Rasheed Wallace and Amir Johnson, while at first I thought Ben Gordon seems likely to start, while old-man-Rip Hamilton comes off of the bench to keep their second unit together; it now appears that Gordon will come off the bench adding potency to the second unit.

In the end it becomes all about adding depth, and gelling as a cohesive unit, which is what each of these teams have seemingly done this offseason. Some other teams that I gotta give a nod to would be the Minnesota Timberwolves, OKC Thunder, and Utah Jazz – some of it was keeping it together, some of it is starting with a young nucleus and building from there. Let’s see where they end up.
